deleterious
A word that sits lovely in the mouth, not so in the liver. Some answers have arrived today, and some continue to be lost in the post. It seems that Isaiah's seizure/bleed activity was deleterious to his liver, and (do not panic, the liver is amazing) some part of his liver died. It is regenerating, as only the liver can do, yet is not quite up to its full potential, hence the somewhat off liver "numbers" and the yellow look he's taking on. With the yellow of bilirubin and the blue of poorly oxygenated blood- well, I shan't be surprised if he soon takes on a green caste. They also believe the stomach and intestines have incurred damage at the same time, considering that he's unable to tolerate feeds still. The liver is a wait and watch, and the stomach is a wait and try again in a few days, because the stomach/intestines take longer to heal than the liver. He spent most of the day off the ventilator, and we'll try for even longer tomorrow. We're "planning on" (h-a, h-a) leaving the hospital without the trach, having lived that life already and moved on to greener pastures. We've also tried to get any and every service to claim responsibility for his fevers (there are no takers) but as I said today, I can handle a fever at home any day, so long as it's not accompanied by seizures. In other worlds, also ours, Jon and Joey went to the wonderful Chicago Aquarium today, where Joey was randomly chosen to help out with the dolphin show, which made me at least as happy as him.
peace be with all of you

a kid by any other color is still our isaiah so we dont care what shade he is as long as he comes home soon. we miss all of you and send our love. tell joey it is still butt-cold in Michigan ( he and grandpa had a great time with this phrase on the way home sunday) our love to all. mom
i am sure zeke could be fuscia with lavender polka dots and still be the winner during this hospital stay. glad to hear of the extended stay away from the vent, and pray for more victories to come. cant wait to see and talk to all four of you. with all my love and prayers. jim
It seems a long time coming, but it's "nice" to finally have some real answers. I'm with mom and Jim, it doesn't matter what color Isaiah is, we just can't wait for him to come home! How cool that Joey got to assist with the dolphins today. I bet that will be a memory he won't soon forget! Take care, all of you.
Love you guys.

So as answers begin to trickle in, it would seem the hurdles have decreased somwhat in height. As the body begins to heal itself, the spirit continues to campaign against all this "deleterious" activity! (Jen you sent me to the dictionary again.) What fun Joey must have had participating in the dophin show - a pleasant memory, for sure! We know you can . . . we know you can . . . we know you can, Isaiah Line up those trains and chug along home soon! We love you! Grandma and Grandpa Voss (GGV)
"deleterious"...hmm... i want to recraft that word and say it is taken from the latin root meaning 'deliriously happy', but i haven't been given OED alteration rights. Until then, I will adapt to such unsatisfying language. I will relish though- "butt-cold" from Mrs. Armstrong's post. And as aforementioned, green, pink or otherwise, Brooklyn has Zaya's back. love- alic
i am so happy for all of you that some answers are coming. it is nice to know what you are dealing with. we continue to hope for healing and the safe return to Holland. I am sure joey was thrilled to be chosen in the dolphin show. i can just picture his face when they pointed to him! hoping all of you are keeping warm. we love you

Sounds like with the jaundice and poor O2, Isaiah has taken on a "maize and blue" appearance which I prefer over Jim's fuscia and lavender. So to me he's sportin' some good color...for now...but still praying that his color returns back to normal and his liver function returns. The only thing worse would be for him to start taking on a Michigan State Green appearance.
Love you guys.
Cathy
I'm so thankful to see those big eyes of Zaya's. They've made me melt from the beginning. And I can picture Joey so well: his smile and his, "Mom, guess what!!!"
We've rallied the troops and are all on stand-by.
KST
And also with all of you. I will pray that his body will continue to make progress. How exciting for Joey to get picked to help out. I can only imagine the big smile on his face. Thanks for the update.
